After purchasing and trying out this gold rosin my cello sounds like an entirely new instrument. If your play level is already high you can still get a lot out of this gold rosin. The shipping was rather quick and the included gifts that came with my order are brilliant. I can’t recommend this rosin enough, regardless if you are a beginner or experienced player. Go ahead and try it out for yourself!

I use Laubach gold rosin with Evah Pirazzi strings. It provides just the right amount of grip and, crucially, is much less 'sticky' than other rosins which I have tried. I'm sure that it can be used with violin strings across the Pirastro range, but I find it is particularly suited to Evah strings.

As a primarily classically trained singer trained by one of the most celebrated voice pedagogues in the entire western hemisphere, I am hyper sensitive to tone, not just with brightness or darkness, but background noise, holes in the resonance, and detail in the sound that is indicative of the sound production. Since beginning learning violin just over 9 months ago, I've had a real chip on my shoulder to devise the absolute cleanest, detailed sound possible with what I have to work with.

Rosin is something that has proven even more harebrained than string choice. Different popular string lines are highly innovative and have a huge following that can be heard by countless artists. Rosin is an all-too-different affair. What goes into different rosins is a complete and total mystery, and major brands very often neglect devising a truly excellent mixture. Not only that, I have become hyper-sensitive to rosin action on the thicker G string and just received a cake of Kolstein Ultra bass rosin that, when mixed sparingly with violin rosin, provides a bit of extra grip necessary to secure the lower strings.

But violin rosin… A popular IG artist violinist recently posted about Laubach's gold rosin, and after reading about it, I decided I had to try some. Had to. This rosin includes authentic .999 gold in the mixture, unlike many popular “gold” rosins that were lab-tested to include virtually no gold at all. I also needed a second set of strings on deck to replace my Il Cannone strings when they wear out in a few months, so I got a package of Evah Pirazzi medium strings from them as well that was priced at a discount bundled with the rosin. All of their string orders also currently come with a spare E!

Laubach, however, went above and beyond and included their cleaners, a magnetic pencil, a polishing cloth, and Mozart chocolates as a thank you for sharing my choice with all of you! It almost brought me to tears. As an American bearing witness to a daily war on the poor, war on the youth, and xenophobic war on outsiders, this type of generosity is a gem. Thank you Laubach Violins, and God bless you!

Superb Playing Quality (Saturday, 14 December 2019 16:10)

After using the "cheap rosin" for years, I decided to splurge and try the Laubach gold after hearing some positive comments from professional players.
The difference is night and day. This rosin is truly amazing. It's very easy to apply and it definitely grips the strings very well. I am shocked with the improved sound quality, providing a smooth, even sound from tip to frog. Since using this rosin, I've noticed significantly less "squeaks" from the strings and I can play much longer before needing to rosin the bow again.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend !

I just can't rate as fantastic, It is ONLY GOLD ROSIN! However it is a wonderful rosin and my son says everyone loves his Rosin. I love the case. Perfect size, and easy to open and close.

This is my favorite gold rosin that I personally use for violin playing. I have found it gives a little better feel to how the bow grabs the strings compared to other rosins, and lasts for a long time.

    Eric (Saturday, 27 June 2020 13:47)

Laubach Gold rosinfor violin is my favorite rosin to use. It lasts a long time and really helps the bow hair stick to the strings. I've tried other "cheap" rosin before and the rosin never lasts long and always ends up in cracked pieces. I highly recommend this rosin to anyone!

    Steve (Saturday, 10 October 2020 12:01)

The Laubach Gold rosin is what I use. I would say it's a medium to medium hard, but the huge chunk that you get made me skeptical how good it is at first. I've loved it though. For me, it gives just enough grab (not so much like bass or cello rosin which some people have told me to try) and gives a really smooth and clear tone. Much better than other ones I've tried before (i.e. Olive, Eudoxa and Hidersine). I still use the Hidersine piece I have for my school instrument which is good enough for it, but the Laubach rosin is my "gold" for the bow. Plus it is decently priced and easy to buy. For me and my instrument (I use Obligato's by the way) it's easy to tell when I don't have anymore rosin on my bow cause some of the sound is gone as well as the slightest grip on deteché bowings being gone.

    Jennifer (Saturday, 10 October 2020 13:49)

I have used Gustav Bernadel (light) for years, but recently switched to Laubach gold. It performs really well for me. I use "siberian violin bow hair" on my bow which is coarser than most hair, grabbier. The Laubach gold violin rosin blends well with the coarsness of the hair, giving me a response, and a clarity of sound which is absolutely essential for the kind of music I play (Celtic).
Some other rosins I like are Hill, Hidersine, Petz, and Melos (from Greece).

The Master Bow and Rosin - How to Look After

The bow is a very important part of the violin, indeed it can be worth as much as the fiddle. Some gold mounted bows made by a reputable maker could be worth more than €6000.

Laubach limited edition master violin bows
Laubach limited edition master violin bows
The tension of the bow is controlled by a screw in the nut of the master bow.

The tension of the bow is controlled by a screw in the nut of the master bow. This can be made of ebony, but in more expensive bows can be made of tortoiseshell or ivory, adorned with inlaid mother of pearl. From the nut there is a long thin screw which goes into the nut of the bow and above this is where you hold. The nut sticks out a bit from your fingers. The screw goes into the wood of the bow which has been bored to take it, and that goes through the little nit.

Just tighten this to get the correct tension of the bow. Here again some people like to play with a very tight bow and some people like to play with less tension in the bow hair. Nobody, of course, plays with an absolutely flat bow. You would get no sound at all! Which maybe your neighbors would like, but its not a good way to learn!

The bow hair, of course, needs violin gold rosin

The bow hair, of course, needs violin gold rosin, a solid residue left after turpentine has been distilled. You don't have to put on a lite, but what you do need to do is to put enough on so that you can draw the bow across the strings with a certain amount of pressure that will give you a note. If there is no violin rosin on the bow at all it will just float over the top of the strings, it is the rosin which grips that part of the string you are bowing on to produce a note.

You have to put rosin on the bow every time you play the violin

You should put rosin on your bow every time you play - just a couple of rubs of rosin should be sufficient. When you have a bow rehaired or when you buy a new one from a dealer, he will violin rosin the bow for you in its initial stage with its brand-net untouched hair. When you get the bow first and the hair has been already used, you will need to give it three or four rubs full-length on a piece of rosin, almost like 'playing' the piece of violin gold rosin.
