The BAMBERG´S Acusticus shoulder rest is one of the newest breakthroughs on the violin market. I have used this shoulder rest now for a while and am actually seeing improvements in resonance and playablity. The comfort level was initially most impressive to me, but the more I use it, the more I start to see other advantages. Depending on how I'm feeling, there are many levels of padding I can add or remove to get the best possible hold of the instrument. This is something you certainly can't do with traditional shoulder rests, so the BAMBERG´S Acusticus is definitely worth the price.

Kun Collapsible Violin Shoulder Rest EU

Kun Collapsible is a fully adjustable ergonomically-designed high density plastic and foam violin shoulder rest. Model comes with collapsible feet for compact storage.

Both feet can be folded against the shoulder bar for easy storage. This model is perfect for a case where there is not a lot of room.

In the most common way of storing a shoulder rest and a violin in a case, the shoulder rest is usually placed under the scroll (head) of the violin. This usually results in violins getting out of tune and scratches to the scroll by the feet. By folding the feet of the shoulder rest and storing the padded side up, these problems can be avoided.

Ergonomically designed to fit the contour of the shoulder. Dense foam padded bar provides comfort and prevents slippage.

Features a wide range of height and width adjustments for personal preference. Height is adjusted through the height of the legs while there are 16 possible width adjustment positions. Shoulder bar angle is adjustable to offer further comfort and support.

BON MUSICA SHOULDER REST

This shoulder rest is different in that it actually “curves” onto the shoulder. This means that it is not dependent on the chin pressing down on the violin to hold it in position. If most shoulder rests do not work too well, this maybe an option. Seems to work with people that have longer necks. The curving is adjustable. Have sold many of these with very good results.

GREAT SHOULDER REST (Saturday, 27 June 2020 14:03)

I personally think this is the best shoulder rest I have found so far. Up to this point I have had trouble finding a balance between comfort and adjust-ability, which the Kun certainly solved. The price is worth it, although there are some cheaper options out there.

KorfkerRest Shoulder Rest. I think I may possibly own or have tried almost every shoulder rest on the market. Blessed with a long neck, I need not only height but also a good, well-conforming shape for my shoulder rest. This shoulder rest has very thick padding, feels well-constructed, fits the violin well without falling off, and is actually a good buy compared to comparable rests such as the Kun or the Viva.
Several of my students prefer the KorfkerRest. Typically, these students have long necks and have not been satisfied by other rests that they have tried.
If you have had problems finding a comfortable shoulder rest, this is certainly a good option to consider.

    Carlos (Thursday, 19 March 2020 20:17)

The shoulder rest elevates the instrument off of the musician's shoulder, helping to relieve stress, and allowing the instrument to resonate.

The molded plastic feet are covered with a sturdy rubber material. This eliminates the problem of scratching, and you don't have to replace the rubber tubes! Very comfortable.

Very Comfortable shoulder rest (Saturday, 14 December 2019 23:40)

With the shoulder rest my daughter had before this one, she had a hard time holding the violin under the chin without some support from the left hand. This shoulder rest solved the problem in a day or so -- if not right away. I'm very pleased with the purchase.
Not much to say - shoulder rests can be much more expensive than this one. I took a chance and won. The Everest fits snugly and works great. The molded polymer is strong. Feels nice too.
    Shipped very quickly.

Buying recommendations shoulder rest for violin and viola.

The subject of shoulder rests has generated a lot of controversy amoung teachers and violinists. Because they were not used until fairly recently and also because they may affect the sound somewhat, there are still some teachers who recommend against using them at all. Certainly, there are some violinists who do fine without a shoulder rest. Often, these people have short necks.

For example, David Oistrakh, one of my favorite recording artists, fits this mold!

For the rest of us, a shoulder rest can make playing the violin much more comfortable. It frees the left hand from having to support the instrument and should allow the violinist to play without raising the left shoulder. The choice of shoulder rest depends on the unique physiology of each student. Sponges (even a kitchen sponge with a rubber band) and Play-on-Air are examples of padded rests.

Play-on-Air

Play-On-Air. Some teachers prefer rests that are not rigid, such as this Play-on-Air model. However, the sound can be affected by the pressure of the pad against the back of the violin.

There are also various rigid models with feet that are produced by many manufacturers. Each fits slightly differently.

Everest Shoulder Rest

Everest Shoulder Rest

The Everest is made in America and is relatively cheap. The padding is thick and the rest seems to fit well for medium to long necks. One model offers collapsible folding feet.

Bonmusica Shoulder Rest

Bonmusica Shoulder Rest

The Bonmusica is made of flexible metal with a "hook" that can be molded to fit over the shoulder. It is a heavy rest that can affect the sound more than some but can work well for violinists who have not found any of the other rests to be comfortable.

Kun Shoulder Rest

Kun Shoulder Rest

Kun Shoulder Rest is the original inventer of the rigid rest with feet. There are several different models. They tend to fit most people fairly well but can be expensive.

The Mach One Shoulder Rest

The Mach One Shoulder Rest

The Mach One is light and made of a nice quality maple. Some people find it very comfortable but it is rather short and the padding can seem slippery.

Wolf Shoulder Rest

 Wolf Shoulder Rest

The Wolf is an excellent rest for very tall necks, but can feel very rigid. Though it appears to have no curve, it can be bent to suit the player.

PIRASTRO KorfkerRest Shoulder Rest

PIRASTRO KorfkerRest Shoulder Rest

The ultimate in sound and comfort

The Pirastro Shoulder Rest is the newest invention from the German hightech brand Pirastro.

The main pros about this shoulder rest are:

- Very lightweight, the lightest shoulder rest available on the market

- Due to the flexibility of the shoulder shape and multiple adjustment options such a rotating the feet by 360 degrees this Pirastro shoulder rest is the most comfortable one.

- There are many additional affordable components available for this shoulder rest and buying replacements due to wear of components is simple. Replacing components is sufficient and the entire shoulder rest doesn't need to be bought again.

The only con is:

The steep price for this Pirastro shoulder rest.

However if you do value comfort and well build quality, you shouldn't cheap out on the best available shoulder rest - like a well made premium German car.

Viva Shoulder Rest

Viva Shoulder Rest

The viva comes in many colors and adjusts in two planes. This extra adjustibility allows it to accomodate certain violinists who have had difficulty finding a comfortable rest.

Collector's item.

In sum, my recommendation for selecting a shoulder rest is to try several and look for a comfortable fit. In the case of the rigid models with feet, the pad should rest securely against your shoulder and collar bone without any gaps between you and the rest. Try to find a violin shop that has a selection of rests and will allow you to try them. Adiditionally, your teacher should be able to help you assess fit.
