What are Violin Mutes?
A violin mute is an instrument accessory that has been used by violinists since the 17th century. They are placed typically on the bridge of the violin, where the heart of sound vibrations occur. Violinists can vary their sounds by combinations of their bow speeds, contact points and finger placement. A mute gives another dimension to varying sound that these typical methods are unable to achieve. Mutes increase how heavy the bridge is on the violin, thus varying the sound. It typically makes a violin’s tone color sound soft and less vibrant. The more prongs that a mute has will restrict
more sound and vice versa. The material of the mute is also a huge factor in how it will vary your sound.
When Should I consider using Violin Mutes?
Practice Mutes can be purchased by Beginner to Advanced Players who are looking to practice in a quiet environment. Other types of mutes are typically only used by intermediate to advanced players. Violin Mutes are very common in an orchestra environment, when the conductor wants a string section to sound more muffled. This mute is a great accessory for my viola, and is perfect for practicing at home, where you require a slightly quieter sound. Yet it does not simply soften the sound; it helps to produce a warm, mellow tune that gives you goosebumps. A must-have for anyone living amongst a landlord.
